"we all have our reasons, every one of them personal." We hear about Captain Hywel long before proper introductions, initially mentioned as an old friend of Captain Siridean's from their Academy days, and thereafter in discussion of the nebulous Esthar Special Forces. Despite his dour countenance Captain Hywel is generally respected, a professional who might even toe the line of Estharian propriety in order to hear your opinions or ideas. Whether or not he promptly dismisses them is an entirely different matter, and this combined with his intensely focused work ethic makes him a well-suited operative for the ESF. His motives and intentions remain his own, "the mission" always taking priority. When we finally meet Durstan face to face, it soon becomes apparent that his Byronic heroism is not a façade, at least not of anyone else's making. Helping to secure Esthar and its interests has become his life, costing him most if not all of his personal relationships. The question raised is if he would do any differently given the chance, or if he has wholeheartedly embraced his lot in this war. Both he and Captain Siridean seem eager to know the answer, yet what they find may not be an answer at all so much as Durstan's condemnation.

▌COMBAT Like all officers, Durstan has the standard training of CQC and basic weapons techniques under his belt. On top of that, very early on he chose to dual-specialize in marksmanship and paramagic, resulting in being a sniper from the former and a competent magic user concerning the latter. As such, he easily qualifies for ground combat. It may not need be said but, while a sniper's position is a given, Durstan should always take the rear in any combat situation. He is more vulnerable to Status spells than most, "Blind" and "Confuse" particularly, and should be supported accordingly. Other than that, though well-rounded in the elementals, Durstan shows a particular knack for Time magic, the trifecta of "Haste," "Slow," and "Stop" his favorite openers and "Demi" his main damage dealer.
